From career goals to bucket list adventures, each retiree’s journey is uniquely their own. At Capital Investment Advisors, we love spotlighting retirees who are embracing the freedom, joy, and fulfillment that retirement can offer. Today, we’re thrilled to share the story of Matt and Donna—two spirited travelers who recently checked off two major destinations from their retirement wish list: India and Nepal.

A Dynamic Duo in Retirement

Donna retired in April of 2022 from a career in manufacturing finance in the aerospace industry. Matt waited until October of 2023 to finish up an eclectic career that began with five years in the U.S. Air Force, followed by three decades in manufacturing. He even fit in two years working in the non-profit sector and three in the “no profit” sector as an entrepreneur specializing in bilateral trade development between Eastern Europe and the United States.

With retirement underway, they turned their attention to a long-held dream: exploring the wonders of the Indian subcontinent.

Chasing Tigers & Temples

Tempted by the lure of the Taj Mahal, Bengal tigers, and the mystical Himalayas, Matt and Donna began planning their adventure in early 2024. They mapped out a trip from November 8–24, spending nine days in India followed by seven in Nepal.

Having previously traveled to the Serengeti with a trusted travel agency, they returned to the same firm—and found success once again, relying on personal referrals and on-the-ground expertise.

Travel Smarts: Navigating Challenges

It’s a long journey: nearly 20 hours in transit to Delhi, not including airport layovers. Adding to the complexity, Donna was just seven weeks post-knee surgery. The solution? First-class flights. The extra comfort gave Donna space to move, recover, and arrive ready to explore.

They also kept a brisk pace—rarely spending more than two nights in one place. Their advice? Don’t hesitate to upgrade your travel experience when health or comfort is at stake. After a lifetime of hard work, you’ve earned it.

Local Wisdom & Practical Tips

  • Plan to tip generously. Both India and Nepal rely heavily on tourism, and tipping service workers (guides, drivers, hotel staff) is not just appreciated—it’s essential. With ATMs less reliable than in the U.S., Matt and Donna recommend preparing daily envelopes of cash in advance.
  • Customize your itinerary. Matt wasn’t fond of the frequent trips to local souvenir shops built into the tour. Though it’s a worthy cause to purchase clothing and art to raise money for vendors, it’s likely a common itinerary item generated automatically. Be sure to share your preferences with your travel planner beforehand.

Can’t-Miss Experiences

Highlights included:

Tracking tigers in Ranthambore National Park.

Riding elephants up to the majestic Amer Fort in Jaipur.

Scenic flights over Mount Everest from Kathmandu (a must-do!)
If they had to do it again? They’d take the helicopter ride that lands near Everest Base Camp.

BOTTOM LINE

Travel is one of the most beloved core pursuits among happy retirees as they create purpose-filled, joyful lives. If you find yourself hankering for the open road, sea, or air, listen to the experiences of those who have successfully made the trek, and use what they learned as a springboard to your own unforgettable adventure.

Matt and Donna are just getting started. Next on their itinerary? A Spring 2026 adventure to New Zealand and Australia. Something tells us this won’t be their last spotlight!
