Q: I have a very good knowledge of personal finance and investing. I am an index investor / boglehead. I have read most books by John Bogle, William Bernstein, Rick Ferri etc. I am also a big believer in Dave Ramsey’s advise when it comes to debt management. Which is to have 0. I track every dollar spent using Quicken Financial Software. I am 33 and my wife is 32 our household income varies from about $130,000 to $150,000 depending on my overtime. I am a police officer and will have a defined benefit pension with 50% of my total compensation and a COLA up to 65%. I make a point to save approximately 20% of it. We have no debt other than our mortgage and 2 very small loans with very low interest rates (student loans / home improvement). I have my own plan in place and contribute to my 457, my wife’s IRA, my one son’s 529 college fund, and am preparing to start a second 529 fund when my second son is born. I am trying to find a professional who can look over what I am doing and see if I am on the right track. I also had some questions on tax planning. I have recently made decisions to stop contributing to a Roth and focus on my 457. Do you have a rough ballpark idea of what a Financial Plan would cost me to obtain your opinion on these issues or even the cost for me to maybe speak with you and bounce some of my ideas and concerns and get your opinions.
A: At 33 and 32 years old, you and your wife are considerably ahead of the game and well disciplined in planning for your retirement.
As a fee-only RIA (Registered Investment Advisor) our firm charges a set fee for assets under management, billed quarterly, for providing financial planning services and advice with respect to investments, tax, insurance, retirement planning, etc.
That being said, we don’t have breakout costs for developing a financial plan, or an hourly rate for consultations, rather these services are inclusive of our annual fee for the assets that we manage on behalf of our clients.
We do offer a free one-hour consultation and would be happy to provide you with feedback on your current situation.
